3 Crazy Things New Writers Can Do To Improve Their Craft

Trust me. They work.

There is a ton of advice out there about how to be a better writer. I know because I’ve written my fair share of similar articles. It’s a topic I think about a lot. Here are some unconventional techniques that have gone a long way to making my writing better. They’ll work for you too if you give them a try.

New fiction writers can improve their craft by analyzing short stories in their genre. This will help them understand what makes a good story and what elements they need to include in their own stories. By studying the structure of successful stories, new writers can learn how to create compelling plots and characters that readers will care about.

Pay attention to genre conventions, story beats, the theme, and the pace of the writing. Sitting down and thoroughly picking a great piece of writing apart and understanding how it works will go a long way in teaching you how to write a story that will suck your reader in.

If you’re feeling ambitious, you can do this with a whole novel.

Once you understand how a story is put together, it’s time to have some fun with it. Take that same short story or novel you just deconstructed and rewrite it with a twist. Keep the basic plot elements like story beats, theme, and pacing, but change the character and the setting.

This exercise will force you to think about all the different elements of a story and how they work together. It will also help you to come up with new ideas for your own stories.

The idea of doing this actually comes from Story Grid by Shawn Coyne. I recommend the book if you haven’t read it.

This is probably the most important thing you can do to improve your writing. The more you write, the better you’ll get at it. Make a commitment to write at least 1000 words a day, no matter what.

It doesn’t matter if it’s garbage. Just get the words down on the page. The more you do it, the easier it will become and the better your writing will be. This is how you build up your muscle memory and learn to trust your instincts as a writer.

These are just a few of the things you can do to improve your writing. If you’re serious about becoming a better writer, you need to be willing to put in the work. But if you do, it will pay off in the end. Your writing will become tighter, more focused, and more compelling. And isn’t that what we all want?

So go out there and start writing!
