Over the last 50 years, however, our lifestyle has changed drastically. We have shifted away from our hunter-gatherer lifestyle to a more sedentary indoor lifestyle. This shift has led to a change in…
I worked as a hospice nurse when I decided to find a religious practice to guide my spiritual beliefs.
In my work, I witnessed the terminally ill go through the dying process; something most of us never see repeated over and over. The longer I worked in hospice, the more I saw small miracles. My patients and their families told me stories about their experiences with angels, dead relatives, or other coincidences of spiritual and emotional healing through their loved one’s dying process. I found my spirituality in my hospice work, but I didn’t have a religion to express my beliefs.
I started looking into different denominations; I attended evangelical and regular church services, mass, synagogue, Buddhist lectures, and other forms of worship.
I remember one evangelical church in particular. As I walked in, people were huddled in circles speaking tongues in the hall outside the nave. The stage had a gigantic screen, with video accompanying loud music. I found a place near the aisle and watched as the church blasted song after song without pausing in between the music. The congregation was on their feet, singing the words from memory, closing their eyes, and raising their hands. Each song created a more agitated state until it became a surreal scene like from a horror movie.
I left about twenty minutes after I got there and never attended the actual service.
I wanted my devotion to be more reflective and tranquil. I loved ritual and found a religious sector that spoke to me: Catholicism.
Catholicism is an inherited religion. You’re born or married into it. I don’t know anyone (other than myself) who willingly ventured into the Catholic faith as an adult. So, why? Why would I choose that religion?
Well, I felt at home there. My grandmother was Catholic, and although my mother rebelled against her religious…

How come that there are people at the top of companies who aren’t actual leaders? Sure, they have authority and we do as they say, but would we follow them if we didn’t have to? At the same time…
