Starting A Business

So. I am at school in England and they have started a club, called Enterprise Club (original, I know). They have given us the opportunity, and budget to start a business. This business can start out in school but can expand to a larger scale (if we are successful). We have had an idea to start a business where we sell stationary, we are currently in early stages of development (by we I mean myself and 4 other people).

At the minute we are doing product research and have found a niche. We have missed the annual Christmas fare and the next “big fair” is for valentines day. We intend to set up a stall and sell personalised pens that are delivered straight to the person. We can think of this as the trial sale and after that we can see what has sold well or not. We are hoping to expand into selling basic stationary to those who have forgotten, a big market. Our school has a uniform store, which also sells stationary, but I think they will be easy to sort out with the help of the teacher involved we might be able to convince the head to “discontinue” the uniform store. If that doesn’t work we may still be able to make sales as we have the ability to “relate” to the students who are missing stationary. Would you rather go to a school run store to buy required equipment, or students.

We have come up with a logo and name, which I will not announce when/if we create our website. We might expand to nearby schools but we will need trustworthy staff to run the stores. We need to allocate roles between staff members, which will be difficult as there are some defiant and stubborn members. I am unsure how long the business will run for, it will hopefully last a while, at least until I leave school. We were only allowed one of our own choice for GCSE’s (EBACC, look it up). I chose computer science so this is my only chance to learn about how a business runs (along with the apprentice). So if anything, this will give me some valuable lessons to take with me in to the real world.

Hopefully through out these posts you will see how our business gets on and hopefully succeeds in to a “booming empire”. Always look on the positive. I am not afraid to share the failures and successes on our journey.
