The last two weeks have seen an unprecedented level of sales volume and new users join the NFT space, all thanks to a single project. NBA Topshot, a digital, officially licensed, basketball collectible platform has gone where all NFT projects dream of but have yet tread — it has become almost mainstream. Created by Dapper labs and hosted on the Flow blockchain, new users have joined quicker than the website can handle, and sales volumes have rocketed the platform to number one. The combination of frictionless trading, verifiable ownership and transparency that NFTs provide, along with the mainstream appeal of official licensed basketball memorabilia, has been a catalyst for large user adoption. And the best part? The Vault holds quite possibly the most valuable moments on the platform, with Whaleshark expertly scooping up many legendary moments for a bargain price. As multiple legendary moments have already sold for over $50,000, the sky is the limit for the Vault.
CryptoPunk prices have rocketed past the moon, to an astronomical level. The OG’s of the NFT world, CryptoPunks are fetching a hefty price from when they were freely given away 3 years ago. This capped alien, 1 of only 9 aliens to exist, sold for over 600 ether, and the crazy part is, that this may have been considered cheap! Since the selling of this alien, another one has received a bid of 666 ether.
While not strictly NFT related, Enjin (ENJ), the creator of ERC standard 1155 for NFTs, recently became the first gaming/NFT related token to be approved by Japanese regulators. Japan Virtual Currency Exchange Association (JVCEA) accepted Enjin’s application after a long two year process, causing ENJ prices to soar.
Another heavyweight joined Nifty gateway for their first NFT drop. Justin Roiland, co-creator of the hit tv show, Rick and Morty, offered up a number of sketches from the popular TV show for auction, with some proceeds going towards homelessness in Los Angeles. With hundreds of the open editions being minted, and the 1/1 silent auction (shown below) selling for $150,000, Roiland’s first foray into NFTs has been a resounding success.
@masonnystrom on twitter gave us a run down of social tokens and how they are going to succeed in the space. $WHALE being one of the tokens mentioned as an example of “What a group can accomplish … in scale than an individual…”
