Istanbul Cats

If there are still sultans in Turkey in the 21st century, they are definitely the cats.

As felines overwhelmingly become the ultimate winners of expanding social media industry, cats living in Istanbul — being called historically Constantinople still keep being stunning in this 16-centuries-old metropolis. They have reached roughly 150,000 of catulation, which could be one percent of the entire city’s population.

Torties, Tabbies, Tuxedoes, Calicoes. Everyday they appear on the streets and lanes, either loafing around on a mat or traveling into the unknown. You can easily find them in Cihangir area also in Beyoglu district around the Galata Tower.

The documentary released in 2017 Kedi shows that Istanbul cats are living freely and independently in Istanbul without worries, for the reason that Turk habitants always feed them with water and foods. In case of extreme weathers such as low temperature and snow, cat shelters everywhere will help protect these fluffy friends. They act every action philosophically like human being and they can fight easily for land ownership and girls.

Istanbul cats are commonly believed to share the same forefathers who arrived the city from Egyptian merchants’ ships, as they were kept onboard to catch disturbing rats. Being a favoured creature, cats have played a significantly important role throughout islamic history. It is believed that the Prophet Muhammad appreciated cats for their cleanliness and heroic actions like protecting him from snakes.

Gli has been living for 15 years inside Hagia Sophia since her birth. She has hosted millions of visitors coming per year. She could have been a hunter if it weren’t due to her age. Now Gli is enough too old to be a hunter and it’s her time to retire while receiving adorations from all around the world.

The celebrity Gli. Isn’t she photogenic?

Another celebrity cat in Istanbul was Tombili. He was famous for the funny pose photo taken while he was thinking his life (would seem better if he had a glass of çay). He soon became a protagonist of an internet meme.

Sadly Tombili went to cat heaven in 2016 and in memory of him, the neighborhood built a bronze statue of his symbolic pose done at the exact same spot. The statue is in Ziverbey on Asian side but it was reported to be removed.

The once phenomenon of internet Tombili, died, yet still adored afterlife.

Next time when you visit Istanbul, don’t hesitate to buy some kedi yemegi, which is cat food in Turkish and feed these cute creatures. They will show their appreciation to you.
