I Give Up. This Site is Not Deploying.

Setting up the site using Next.js was very easy. I made some mistakes in my planning (including not wireframing every page and not wireframing a mobile version), but aside from planning mistakes, I didn’t run into any major difficulties.

Until I tried to deploy the site.

I wanted to get some experience using AWS, so I decided to deploy my site using Amazon’s Elastic Beanstalk. My first problem was that I needed to create a .zip file of the site, and I didn’t know how to do that. A little bit of googling later, and I had a .zip file.

I uploaded the .zip file … and got a 502: Bad Gateway error. A little bit more googling, and I discovered that my app was running on the wrong port. That’s when I started going down the rabbit hole.

Then I started googling. That’s when things went very wrong. I tried a few things that didn’t work at all, and eventually my error moved from 502 to 503 (service unavailable). I deleted everything I had done on AWS and tried again … and now I’m back at the 502 error.

That’s it: I give up. This site is not getting hosting on AWS. At least not this weekend. That’s more struggle than it’s worth. But I’m not giving up on having a portfolio site… so where do I go from here?

The way I see it, I have a few options:

I don’t know which option I will choose. My plan is to think about it today, and get started on the next phase of my site tomorrow. Right now I’m thinking I may try to deploy to Heroku (which I have more experience with) and then forward that to a custom domain using Google domains. If I have trouble deploying to Heroku, then I’ll probably rewrite it as a straight React app and then try deploying that to either AWS or Heroku. But that’s just my current thoughts. (I may eventually rewrite the site using Ember, but that’s probably a more long-term project)
