Past vs. Modern Landscaping Trends

The 20’s

1920’s landscaping was all about the greenery. People wanted to have as much nature as possible and even installed bird feeders, bird houses and bird baths to attract wildlife. They also loved fish ponds and rock gardens in order to draw more nature and wildlife. Bird watching was a popular hobby at this time, so plants and trees with berries were some of the more popular choices.

Front yards had more landscaping than backyards so that people could sit on their front porch and enjoy the outdoors. The backyard was used more for drying clothes on clothes lines and storing garbage cans so there was not as much landscaping done there.

Many recreational activities were done outside and were implemented into the landscape design. Campfires, putting greens and croquet grounds were very popular landscape features.

The 50’s

During the 1950’s suburban lifestyle became increasingly popular. The landscape style was less classy and had a lot of added plastic decorations and boxed hedges. The 1950s were defined as a decade of “modernism.” Of course that modernism is different than the current styles today.

The home building industry boomed and there were a lot more landscaping and home projects. People loves plastic pink flamingos, tons of green lawn and many evergreens. The lawn was the symbol of suburbia dream living. Everyone wanted a greener and bigger lawn.

1980’s to Now
With every passing decade landscaping is changing. Computer technology vastly changed the landscaping industry. Landscape designers began used computer-based methods instead of hand drawing. This led to more elaborate and complex landscape designs that Utah landscapers still use today.

The demand for landscaping services grew exponentially from this point on. There are tons of home makeover shows and garden design programs that have also helped improve interest in home and landscaping. Other high-tech products made maintenance of yard easier so that anyone could have a beautiful landscape. People care about the curb appeal of their homes and Utah landscapers and landscaping industries continued to rise.

The landscaping trends have changed from the 1920s, 1950s but largely remained similar to the 1980s and on. Small changes have been made but people still love green grass, and trees. Today’s landscaping trends still carry the theme of an older focus with the green and sustainable practices but they are just dialed up a few notches. Landscaping has always been important and will continue to be important. Contact your Utah landscaper to get going on a yard you will love with trends you can trust because they withstand the test of time.
