Writing Time

Available Time

I started this year with the intentions to write and post more frequently. As an avid blogger at work, I thought this might be an easy way to extend my writing habit. So I created one post over the holidays and yet to go back until now in mid February to write my second post. Obviously underestimating the amount of time or focus I would have to continue writing. This isn’t all driven by schedule and the range of activities or events that need attention, this was my choice to allow my focus to be elsewhere. Having the time to write on a daily basis isn’t going to happen, but starting with once a week is a good initial goal.

Sway as Blogging Platform

The second interesting serendipity opportunity that got me focused on writing at home is using Sway. One of the new tools in the O365 suite. I recently spend some time looking into the platform and realized it is a very easy to use and content friendly way to communicate and write blog posts. It feels more natural to write in this platform than a standard word processing platform. Now I can easily log in and create drafts, work on content or simply get my capture an idea. The really great part is with the O365 platform, I can edit and create sways on my phone when not near a computer. So now writing can happen where I am, whether focused at home or sitting at a sports practice, waiting to pick up a kid, it doesn’t matter. This is a great example of how technology can help me to use my time more effectively.

Finding my Voice

As someone interested in blogging and taking that next step, I read a lot of other posts as well. Trying to understand what type of posts are engaging to me and what can I contribute to the community. I am early in my journey for sure and trying to figure out what is that style or focus my writing will have. There are always the top 10 lists which are popular, and I do read several of those, but I know my style is going to be more story telling versus lists. My style is more conversational and writing follows how I am thinking through an idea or topic. For me, my current focus is spending the time to be creative and simply writing, documenting the journey along the way. This for me is more about sharing the story and learning more about myself along the way.

Translating my Writing to Outside Work.

As I mentioned in my one other post, I am working to expand my writing beyond the work blog posts and this is a new challenge for me. Writing for a work audience is challenging for sure and the topics need to be chosen based on the audience. Writing personally is no different, the topics can be different but they can also be more personal which makes for a different dynamic to the writing.

For example, I have a goal of writing a new blog post everyday, this week it didn’t always happen due to schedules, activities and focus was elsewhere, and coming to the end of the week I realized I missed not having the time to capture some of my thoughts, insights and work through the blog posts. Now as I have the opportunity on the weekend to choose what to focus on, writing is what I missed and is how I am spending my time.

So this is my next post that will hopefully become more frequent and being on a weekly schedule I capture ideas throughout the week that will become part of my next blog post.

So here is to simply starting, taking the first step and starting the journey, everything has to start somewhere…………………………………
